OVERCOMPENSATION RACISM 6.29.08 Racism is one of the topics that I pay the most attention to. I don't know why it is, but I've always been aware of skin color and analyzed why certain people react differently to those with different colored skin. Maybe it's just a way to witness someone overcome injustice, to rise above it, or whatever. Of course, the movies and media make it easy to tell when racial intolerance occurs, and the lines are usually quite clear in those instances. However, although I may be sheltered a bit having grown up in the midwest, and knowing full well that racism still exists in the American society as a whole, I often find myself wondering something different. I'd like to consider myself racially tolerant, perhaps even color-blind...but I actually doubt that will ever come to fruition. In truth, I think our society has made significant progress towards accepting those of other color. We live and work with each other on a daily basis in many cities, it's more common, we can witness for ourselves the same value that we all add or subtract from society, seeing that there are just as many good and bad apples in one race as in another. But here's the new crux I ponder -- do we overcompensate? When we're speaking with someone of color, are we more agreeable with them than we would otherwise be? Perhaps some have been able to achieve the point where they both laugh and fight with people of all races in similar fashion, but I doubt we're all there yet. ...I'd actually be curious to see if Obama gets more votes because some white people are afraid they might be called racists if they don't vote for him...
